My tagalog isn’t so good but I am forced to read a book on Angting-Angting(protective amulets) written in tagalog. Quite a challenge but I’m using all the resources available to me, THANK YOU internet!

I am learning are the deeper meaning to our tagalog language. Concepts we, FIL-AMs, can’t articulate but share within our daily lives! We express them in our lives unknowingly, enjoying the benefits of our Pinay-ism!

In reading “Kapwa, The Self in the Other” by Katrin de Guia, PhD I am coming to an understanding of our cultural knowledge. We live it, know it and there are words for it…

Kapwa is a shared identity, that awareness and connection beyond oneself that links us to eachother, nature, ancestors and beyond. Best felt and shared in our gathers, parties and when connecting with our Lola’s and Lolo’s alike. It is the reason we say, “Are you pilipino?” and “We’re all related!”

Where do you feel kapwa in you lives?

Other tagalog concepts:
Maganda is beyond BEAUTIFUL!
Lakas is stronger then physical strenght.
Matapang is bravery, courage, bold,
Mahal wraps love, worth and value in a positive expression…

Thank you for making a comfy place for us to gather! I’m just getting to the books I collected from the Conference… Seems I picked up a book on Angting Anting (protective amulets) written in tagalog. I’m now learning to read tagalog, such a challenge. I’ve had a chance to browse the book and I’ll get to the rest soon!

Again, thank you for all the affirmation! From you and everybody I met in April! I feel like I’ve been a part of this community for my whole life and maybe a few karmic lives before this one!
